The High Ball In Low

The Team Of The Decade 2010s : The Debate

Pundit across the land north and south of the border have started a very topical debate and one close to my heart, the GAA Football Team Of The Decade. One particular article that caught my eye this week was a piece written by GAA correspondent for Pundit Arena , Michael Corry. He discusses his reasoning behind his team of the decade, a team that included only three countries and predominantly Dublin. This has started the trend with Newstalk’s Off The Ball getting in the act selecting their teams. I feel they are all very strong teams but felt there are some players that are worth consideration that weren’t selected.

In years to come when we look back on this decade, the narrative will no doubt centre on Dublin and their seven All-Ireland titles including a first-ever five-in-a-row

The Pundit Arena team includes nine Dublin inter county footballers who have won 52 All Ireland medals between them.
In addition 2012 footballer of the year Karl Lacey and the man child Michael Murphy make up the Donegal Contingent.
While Keith Higgins and Lee Keegan join Aidan O’Shea and Andy Moran as the Mayo representation in the Pundit Arena Team Of The Decade.

Off The Ball GAA Team of The Decade

John Duggan Off The Ball analyst picked his fifteen players , forming a team out of players from Dublin, Kerry, Donegal, Monaghan and Mayo . One entry selected by Duggan was Monaghan’s Conor McManus as corner forward. Overall I feel Duggan has selected a team very fair and reflective of how the decade panned out.

Midfielders: Brian Fenton and Aidan O’Shea

“Brian Fenton has never lost a Championship game. Try to get your head around that! A towering presence, Footballer of the Year in 2018. Those surging runs, the goals, the central presence evoking memories of Brian Mullins and fellow Raheny club-mate Ciaran Whelan. Fenton is a Terminator 2 model. What a player.”

Players I feel should be considered for Team Of The Year Discussion

Kieran Donaghy
An integral part of a Kerry side that triumphed over Donegal in 2014 All Ireland Final. Donaghy still proved he was one of the best forwards in the country that year despite many pundits saying he was past it.

Graham Canty
Played a major role in Cork winning the All Ireland in 2010. A hard hitting defender that year who was always

Con O Callaghan
Despite only being 23 years old, O’Callaghan has made quiet the impact since his debut in 2016. Since then he’s gone on to be an integral part of the Dublin set up. Collecting three all Ireland medals , three Leinster titles and two all stars along the way.
